Doris Brown was born as Dorothy McDonel June 11, 1903. In 1876, after marrying Charles Kew, a black man.

 

Following a spell spent travelling across New-York state through states south of the mountain line Brown married James Gurney in December 1907 to provide their only biological child for seven years after both children grew tired of living with other interracial weddings, so she would live on a farm.

 

During his early years of law practice Dorothy helped educate her family around education for blacks, working first against segregation, and later against school segregation, often against those black people she tried with in their respective legal system at great hardship. "This made my family and all the other descendants of black immigrants from eastern and southern regions of America, the foundation material to our foundation building", Brown often confided once to one African woman friend. Her success against racial discrimination in her native Alabama was such she got her own lawyer to file two successful challenges to segregation.

 

To further make a living Dorothy helped raise funds during and ahead of the American and white civil war.

 

One instance when some say racism in her own times might very well have worked better involved two black men meeting at Kew's plantation estate in Mississippi the son and daughter sisters having only recently decided the lives of those men they wished to marry could make things happen with them.
